Indian Scenario • India is the world largest producer, consumer and importer. • India’s total pulse production hovers at an average of 14-15 millions tonnes in a crop year. • Total consumption is 17-18 million tonnes. • Pulses account for less than 8% of the total food grain production of India. • Stagnant production since past 20 years. • Per capita consumption is declining. (from 60 g in 1950-51 to 32 g at present) • Total supply in 2006-07 was around 9.15 million tonnes, including carry over stock of previous year.

Some Facts About Chana… • Native land of Chana is Turkey popular throughout China, India, North and Eastern Africa, Europe, the America and Australia. • Total global production of chana is estimated to be around 9-10 million tonnes per year. • The Indian production is estimated to be between 5-7 million tonnes per year. • India accounts for 2/3rd of the world's chana production. • India is the largest producer, consumer and importer of chana. • The major countries from where India imports chana are Canada, Australia, Iran and. • Rabi season seeding demand is boosting up chana prices.

  8. …Some Facts About Chana • Lower cost of Australian chana of December shipment ($350-$360 PMT). • The cheap availability of chana from Tanzania. • Lower crop estimates. High temperature in Rajasthan. • Australia's total chana output in 2008 can fall by 8% from last year at 338,000 tonnes. • Lower availability of good chana. • Besides output and demand, carry over stocks, imports and the extent of substitution with other pulses also affect chana prices.

  9. Factors Affecting Pulses Price… • Expectation of fresh arrivals of urad. • Fresh crop arrivals may keep the prices of urad in a range in short term. Overall, less kharif production has been registered. • Stockiest are offloading stocks on quality issue. • India produced 6.45 million tonnes in last khariff season. Total production was 15.1 million tonnes. • The output of pulses in the kharif season is estimated to dip 27 percent to 4.72 million tonnes. • In the last Rabi season pulses were sown over 12.2 mln ha.

  10. …Factors Affecting Pulses Price • Acreage of pulses was down 16.4% to 10.3 mln ha . • India imported 3.52 million tonnes of pulses so far. • Good monsoon rains can boost rabi pulses production. • Government to distribute pulses through PDS. • Government directed four state-run trade houses--State Trading Corp, MMTC, PEC and NAFED--to import and sell at subsidized prices. • The government is planning to promote pulses sowing in the rice fallow area in eastern India and also on rain-fed areas. • Lower acreage may translate into lower production in tur. • In open market, pulses prices are hovering around Rs.45000 to 60000 per tonne.
