Central Wisconsin Master Gardener Training Program • The Central Wisconsin Ag Specialization Team approach to Master Gardener Volunteer training. • Many people learn more effectively through interaction with instructors. • We provide Master Gardener training at our sites via live instructors. • We developed a list of topics that each County Agent is well versed in and enjoys presenting. • These presenters are available to help individual agents when putting together the Master Gardener training program for their county. • RESULT Our Master Gardeners learn from the local experts familiar with the specific environmental conditions of our area and in a more personal situation.

Nutrient Management Training • Why-only apply the nutrients needed to raise the crop; decrease the nitrogen and phosphorus entering groundwater and surface water • What-nine hours of classes to teach farmers to write their own nutrient management plan, refresher classes, individual consultations • Who-249 individuals from Central Wisconsin, over 200,000 acres in the CWAS area • Benefits-evaluations show estimated savings of $5 to $35 per acre in fertilizer costs; cost share received by farmers over $250,000, private firms charge about $7 per acre to write a plan
Grain Crops • Why-profitable grain crop production, apply best management practices, encourage crop rotation • What-Corn, soybean and wheat production winter meetings; Juneau-Adams-Marquette Corn and Soybean Growers Field Day; Crop Scout Training Field Walks; individual consultation • Who-total yearly attendance is about 150 farmers at all meetings and field walks, another 65 individual consultations • Benefits-farmers can growth stage their crops, can identify pests and economic threshold levels of these pests thereby avoiding unnecessary pesticide applications, farmers have a more diverse cropping operation
Soils • Why-keep soils productive, cost-effective fertilizer use • What-encourage soil testing, soil fertility education and recommendations, Soil Quality Workgroup with Team Grains, Master Gardener soils training • Who-over 875 individuals attended the 23 events/seminars/classes/field days where I talked about soils over the last two years • Benefits-apply fertilizer according to soil test recommendations, adoption of practices that will promote soil health by farmers and gardeners
