Welcome to Credenda! With eInstructor, Linda Aksomitis
This afternoon we’ll • Examine benefits of acquiring certification or additional training • Examine Credenda’s Red River College library programs
You’d like professional training, but… • You have a job • There aren’t any training programs nearby • You feel you’d learn more in a class with an instructor and other students than by correspondence courses
Learn with Credenda • Attend classes from anywhere in the world • Weekly classes with your instructor and classmates • One night per week per course • All courses are 8 weeks long • No textbooks required—all content is online • Train with technology
Accreditation • Credenda Virtual College is a campus for Red River College in Manitoba • Red River has the oldest library technician training program in Canada • Red River’s diploma in Library and Information Technology is recognized by the Canadian Library Association, so can be used across North America
Saskatchewan Education • The Minister of Education has recognized the Red River College Library Training Certificate (10 months) for an AQC • Teachersin Class IV who hold a Professional 'A' Teacher's Certificate may qualify for Class V by meeting the requirements for an AQC • Teachers in Class V who hold a Professional 'A' Teacher's Certificate, a Bachelor of Education degree and have completed one year (30 semester hours) of graduate studies may qualify for Class VI by meeting the requirements for an AQC.
What about salary? • Based on EI claims, so may vary
But you’ve been in libraries for years! • You may apply directly to Red River College for recognition of prior learning or to write challenge exams for some courses
Where do I start? • Library Training Certificate • Can be completed in 10 months or up to 6 six years • Is not a library technician diploma, but rather a certificate providing basic training
Library Training Certificate • Prerequisite course – Internet Research (or earlier courses such as Internet Essentials or Internet in Business) • Introduction To Libraries (prerequisite) • 6 additional courses
The six additional courses • Business Communication I • Introduction to Reference • Children’s Literature • Collection Development • Cataloguing: Introduction (16 weeks) • Cataloguing: Bibliographic Database Management Subject Analysis (16 weeks)
The certificate provides… • Basic training in library technical services • Basic training in library public services
Then on to the diploma… • Library and Information Technology Diploma • Recognized as a two-year library technician diploma • Requires four or five years part time study (one or two years with the certificate and 3 additional years) • Allows you to work full time
Diploma courses • Cover many topics from human resources, to Canadian literature, to desktop publishing, to in-depth reference work in the collection
Field Placements • Diploma requires three field placements in three different types of libraries (e.g. school, public, college) • Challenges processed through Credenda for Field Placement credits • Virtual Field Placements available for those who don’t have access to additional types of libraries in their communities
