Facts • For every person killed by a poisonous snake, 10 are killed by a poisonous scorpion. • In Mexico, 1000 deaths from scorpion stings occur per year. • In the U.S., only 4 deaths in 11 years have occurred result of scorpion sting. • Out of 1500 scorpion species, 50 are dangerous to humans.
Minor Sting Symptoms • Pain • Swelling • Tenderness • Skin discoloration • Numbness • Tingling
Serious Sting Symptoms • Severe pain at the site of the sting • Muscle spasms • Abdominal pain or cramps • Dizziness • Convulsions • Wheezing or trouble breathing • Fever and Chills • General weakness • Nausea and vomiting • Drowsiness • Increased saliva • Trouble talking • Itching of the nose, throat, and mouth.
How to Treat Sting • If you are having symptoms of a more serious sting: • Put a small ice bag or cold washcloth on the sting. • Try not to move the are where you were bitten, and if on arm or leg raise it to the level of the heart. • GO TO EMERGENCY ROOM RIGHT AWAY! • Try to take scorpion with you for identification.
How to Prevent • Use traps indoors. • Wear gloves or heavy clothing around areas where scorpions may be. • Inspect and shake outdoor clothing and shoes before putting them on. • Do not go barefoot or sandals around areas where scorpions may be.
