PETER ABELARD(1079-1142) A Tale of Brilliance, Romance, Scandal, Betrayal, Heresy, Love and Friendship. (Also, some Theology.)
Background • Born: Brittany, (West) France • Became itinerant philosopher & teacher at young age • Credited with founding U. of Paris Abbey of the Paraclete
Contexts 1. Scholasticism: • Issue: Relation of Faith and Reason • Task: Harmonize statements on church law • Method: Dialectic (yes and no conversation)
Abelard's book Sic et Non • Means “Yes and No” • Consisted of 158 Q’s in 2 columns • Scripture or tradition gave conflicting answers to these Q’s • Abelard’s Intention: To promote critical discussion and faith • Result: Displeasure
Contrasting with Anselm Anselm: “I believe in order to understand.” Abelard: "I understand in order to believe“ Intention: Assist faith Result: (Guess what?)
Contexts 2. Personal Influences • Love affair with Heloise (b.1101-d.1162) • Niece of Fulbert, Canon of Notre Dame Cathedral • Historia Calamitatus • Love Letters – Old and New -The Letters of Abelard and Heloise (Radice, ed) - The Lost Love Letters of Heloise & Abelard (Mews, ed.)
Abelard's Theology: • Ethics: Intention = merit (meaning) of an act • Christology: Moral Influence Theory of the Atonement • Christ "saves": through his personal activity, not his ontological status • Salvation: What? from our fear of God which separates us from God • Salvation: How? by being enabled to respond to God because we have learned God loves us
The intention of God in the Atonement (cross) was to reveal God's love to humankind. • Salvation = human ethical response to forgiving act of divine love (no substitutionary suffering) • Compare: Mahatma Gandhi & Martin Luther King, Jr.
