Education • What “training” have you received? • Regular schooling – high school onward • Other education • Anything notable there? • Honour roll? • Specialization?
Experience • Previous work • Previous volunteering • Ordered from most recent to least • Include start and end period
Skills • What do you have that others might not? • Computer skills • Musical talents • Oratory skills • Other talents relevant to the field
Awards • Notable ones only • Community soccer trophy not necessary
Polishing it off • Font: professional and consistent • Simplicity • Avoid sensory overloads • No need for scented paper • Contact info • Have it
Polishing it off • Proofread • How many times? Too many times • Consistency • The whole document should look like one functional unit
Final check: • Did you proofread it again? • Did someone else proofread it? • Are your phrases all grammatically correct? • Is it succinct? • 1 page – ideal • 2 pages – okay • 3 pages – issues

What are they? • Your pitch to the employer • All the reasons you should have the job • Highlights of your qualifications • Showcase of awesomeness
Structuring • Own basic letterhead • Preferably same as résumé • Date, recipient • Salutation and subject • Content • Closing
Content • Standard form: • Introduction • Body • Conclusion • Short, simple, to the point
Introduction • You’re submitting an application • You’re happy to do it • Overview of qualifications
Body • What sets you apart • How you achieve success in your field • How you can contribute
Conclusion • Tangential skills • Summary of how you are the best for the position • Statement of desire to discuss
Other notes • Tailor your cover letter • Make it very much for the person to whom you are writing • Make it for the specific position • No “canned” letters • Show you looked into the company • Sell yourself • Make it professional
Polishing it off • Proofread • Did you proofread? • If not, go back and proofread • If so, go back and proofread anyways • Check vocabulary set • Does it show a high level? • Is it overly complex? • Are you an exemplar of fallacies from superfluous, bombastic lexicographical terminology? • What?
Tone: never forget • Why am I writing? • To whom am I writing? • What do I want them to understand? • What kind of tone should I use?
