  2. I. He came to preach good news • His coming was to bind up the brokenhearted • Because of being in captivity or under oppression

  3. 2 Timothy 2:26 “And that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.”

  10. II. He came to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor • His coming was to declare liberty to all from the servitude of sin • Sin’s grip on our lives enslaves us • But it is liberty that frees us

  11. Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

  12. Galatians 5:13 “You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.”

  13. II. He came to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor • His coming was to declare the day of vengeance of our God • We are comforted to know that God’s justice will prevail • Vengeance belongs only to God

  14. Romans 12:19 “Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

  15. III. He came to provide for those who grieve • His coming was to give them a crown of beauty for ashes • Ashes were a common sign of mourning • A crown of beauty is an ornament to celebrate that the grief has been replaced

  16. III. He came to provide for those who grieve • His coming was to give them oil of gladness instead of mourning • Oil was used generously on occasions of festivity • People refrained from using oil in their time of public calamity or grief

  17. III. He came to provide for those who grieve • His coming was to give them a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair • Clothing can be expressive of praise or gratitude rather than indicating grief • Instead of a heavy, burdened and oppressed spirit
