Grants vs Contracts “Research contracts are negotiated between the scientist and a company, and may be of the result of the scientist approaching a company, or vice versa” It is extremely important to engage Lawson’s Grants & Contracts office early in negotiations for the following reasons: Institute overhead fees must be negotiated up-front! Proposed budgets to do the research must be reviewed! Contract must have the appropriate clauses to protect our scientists!

External Funding Database • Excel database • Updated once a month • Can be filtered by therapeutic area of research, funding deadline month, and funding agency • Allows investigators to start preparing for recurring grants well in advance and seek help from Grant Development office, if required Internal Research Fund • Run twice a year (Spring and Fall) • Allows New Investigators to obtain SEED funding to collect pilot data • Funding: $15,000 for a total of two years • Basic Requirements: Must have a faculty appointment at Western, must be a Lawson member, must have primary appointment at a clinical department at either LHSC or St. Joseph’s, research activity must be performed on-site at either LHSC or St. Joseph’s
