Lessons Learned • Problem: Iron Catalyst (chelator) was found to be a suspect carcinogen. • Solution: NJ DEP required the use of non-toxic chelators that were either derived from plants/fruits or associated with foods. NJ Example:
Lessons Learned • Problem: KMNO4 contained metal impurities such as chromium. • Solution: FL DEP required monitoring of metals in groundwater throughout the project. In addition, the use of higher purity permanganate products was recommended. FL Example:
ISCO Status in NJ Past (mid - late 90’s): • 22 sites • all pilot/full scale • all H2O2/Fenton’s • mainly BTEX • other COCs such as MTBE, naphthalene, #2 F.O., CVOCs and PCBs
ISCO Status in NJ Presently: • out of 8 sites, • majority are either NaMNO4 or KMNO4 • also H2O2, sodium persulfate • multiple COCs such as BTEX, MTBE, naphthalene, #2 F.O., CVOCs, MEK, MIBK, etc. • majority were either successful (mass and/or contaminant reduction) or promising or...
ISCO Status in NJ “I have a couple of chem ox cases. I currently do not have time to give you details of each case, but the striking similarity between the cases is that contamination has been liberated and not controlled. The consultants do not seem to think this is an issue.”
