  1. CRTC Gives public money to small record labels and independent artists Regulates cancon – 35%

  2. 35% quota regulation • Outdated and is a leftover from the 70s when there wasn’t a Canadian music industry • Radio industry has never liked it • Bryan Adams wasn’t considered Canadian

  3. Today • Canadian music is not in its “infancy” • Canadian singers are internationally recognized

  4. The Internet • The main source of exposure and consumption of music among young people • By its very nature, it is impossible to regulate

  5. What the heck is “Canadian” music anyway?

  6. Back to the 35 % quota • People are only actually tuned into Canadian music 20% of the time • 12% of sales in Canada are Canadian bands or artists

  7. The Record business • 80% of Canadian recording artists sign with major labels that aren’t Canadian • The other 20% is made up of 240 independent labels.

  8. So why not sink money into those labels to support them and the independent artists they promote? • Well, do we need to spend so much public money in the digital age where “barriers to entry for young pop groups are encouragingly low”.

  9. Sarah Harmer I AM AGLOW I am aglow with thoughts of you Are the stories that you told me true? It doesn’t matter if they are They are to me I am aglow Some might say these thoughts are wrong That you might see yourself in this song I hope that you don’t mind if you do I am aglow with thoughts of you Does it matter that what I remember might be Just my own imagination painting scenes more pretty Is it obvious? Does it show? With thoughts of you I am aglow Some might say I’m thinking in sin So I’ll just sit back and take you in You’re a map of a place; maybe someday I’ll go With thoughts of you I am aglow Does it matter that what I remember is not true Does it matter that all I can think of is you Does it matter that what I remember might be Just my own imagination painting scenes more pretty Is it obvious? Does it show? • With thoughts of you I am aglow.
