This lesson is introducing students to the concept of slope. Students will be introduced to the slope formula and learn how to graph the line of the equation in slope-intercept form. Students will also be given the opportunity to explore the internet to help them further their understanding of the concept. At the end of this lesson, students will be able to connect the concept of slope to the real world. Lesson Overview Developer Page

Students will be formatively assessed by their participation in the class discussion, and contribution to review of the worksheet. They will also be assessed on their completion of the worksheet, and how well they use the internet activities as sources to further their understanding of the concept of slope. Opening the Lesson • To get the students engaged in this lesson, start by asking students what comes to mind when they hear the term slope. • Guide the students to come up with rate of change, rise over run, change in the y-values over change in x-values, steepness of the line, y=mx+ b, y-intercept • 10 minutes Developer Page
Discuss the definition of slope • Ask questions and guide students to the answers, if they are not sure, tell them that they will discover the answers when they explore the internet activities. • Can the slope of a line be positive? Negative? • What is the slope of a horizontal line? Vertical line? • Can a line have a slope of 0? • How would you find the slope given two points on the line? • Give students a worksheet to work on in class, and allow them to use the two internet activities that will help them to understand the concept of slope. • 30 minutes Developing the Lesson Developer Page
To end this lesson, go over the worksheet with the entire class. Allow time for the students to ask questions, and go over problems that they didn’t understand. • After the class has gone over the worksheet, ask students to write a one minute reflection on some real-world concepts that would involve slope. Ask some students to share their answers. • 30-45 minutes Closing the Lesson Developer Page
Materials needed for this lesson include chalkboard or overhead projector, worksheet, and computers with internet access. • Resources available to enhance this lesson include: • Slope - using x and y • Slope-Intercept Form of a Line • Sources used to create this lesson plan: • Explore Learning Slope-intercept form of a line • Explore Learning Slope Calculation Materials, Resources, Credits Developer Page
