Doctrine of God Open theism
introduction • What is Open Theism? • Most radical evangelical response to Classical Theism • Among the Main Proponents • Clark Pinnock, John Sanders, Gregory Boyd, John Polkinghorne • The Openness of God (1994), ed. Pinnock • Firmly evangelical • Place of open theism is an intra-evangelical discussion • Not to be confused with Process Theology • Biblically based rather than philosophical
Open theism’s critique of classical theism • Classical Theism (CT) understands God as the final cause of all that occurs • CT denies human freedom • CT view of God as sovereign is such that he remains unmoved by the world • CT owes much of its view (esp. substance ontology) to Greek thought rather than the Bible
Attributes of god redefined • Not a denial of all attributes of God but a redefinition, a revising • For example, Classical Theism’s view of God as immutable • But God shows himself to be moved by us in Scripture and engaged with the world • II Pet. 3.12 • Genesis 18 • See Veli-Matti Karkkainen’s, Doctrine of God
Understanding of God in open theism • John Sanders • God’s primary characteristic is love • In God’s sovereign freedom, he has allowed his actions to be contingent upon our actions and requests • God exercises general rather than meticulous providence • God allowed us freedom for genuine reciprocal relationship to develop • Dynamic omniscience (esp. in regards to foreknowledge) • Most controversial of Open Theism’s assertions • God knows all that can be known given the kind of world he has created • Future is partly known to God
Understanding of God in open theism • Clark Pinnock • “Unchangeable faithfullness” rather than immutability as understood in Classical Theism • Sovereignty as “sharing power”
