  1. What is Inter Religious Dialogue? Dialogue (dia and logos ) means conversation, encounter, sharing and mutual respect between individuals and groups.

  2. Dr.Ameli Defines dialogue as “A polycentric process of exchange of experiences, knowledge, cultures and civilizations; such a dialogue is the search for solution, clarification and peace based on mutual understanding, which entails openness, progress of knowledge and peacefulness”.

  3. There is a distinction between dialogue and conversation .While dialogue is a pre –organized intentional discussion, Conversation is a process of exchange of ideas and information without any further or previous pre-organized plan. • DIALOGUE is therefore based on a prolonged set of programming based on a give and take reciprocal ,exchange of knowledge and experience but each preserving their identity.

  4. Dialogue requires a profound change of attitudes from both sides . • Dialogue is graduating from meer tolerance to accepting the other and his /her otherness. This calls for the recognition that the other has something of value to offer. • Dialogue is a medium to bring together people with different views or values but who share some common ground .This brings together the other and the self.

  5. Dialogue is not a means to impose ourselves to others but to welcome them. • Cardinal Arinze former president of the pontifical council for inter religious dialogue describes dialogue as “A meeting of heart and mind between followers of various religions. It is Communication between two believers at the religious level.It is walking together towards the truth and working together in projects of common concern .It is a religious partnership without complexes and without hidden agenda and motives.”

  6. Inter-religious dialogue constitutes a potentially significant feature of social cohesion and stability everywhere. • Inter religious dialogue attempts to promote religious and cultural understanding .It is therefore the deliberate effort to facilitate interaction ,among people of different faith persuasions who intend to promote peaceful co-existence among the communities that are pluralistic. • Those who entering into dialogue should be firmly rooted in their faith tradition and should have inner conviction. Its this firm conviction without being secretarian which becomes the firm ground for dialogue.

  7. There should be no superiority among the dialogue subjects because the same undermines the spirit of dialogue. • With the above in mind genuine dialogue implies a recognition of and respect for differences.At the same time it seeks to discover and appreciate common values in the religions involved in dialogue. • A Fruitful mutual understanding cannot be enhanced unless both convergence and recognized differences are held in a creative relationship.

  8. PILLARS OF INTER RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE • Inter religious dialogue demands opennness among believers of different communities. • Inter religious dialogue can be well nurtured where people of different Faiths appreciate and learn from each others faith values,such a dialogue calls for following ;

  9. 1.CAPACITY/COMPETENCIES • In order to carry on dialogue with members of other faiths, believers must have the requisite capacity and skills for doing so. Hence creating a sound theological basis for dialogue thus the calling for those who want to be involved in building their capacity and understanding the otherness of the other.

  10. 2.FIRM BELIEVERS • Fruitful Inter religious dialogue pre supposes that personal religious experiences and firm truth claims. • Dialogue must be build on solid foundations of the ethics of convictions. • People who enter into dialogue must be firm believers who have encountered the Holy. • True and authentic dialogue cannot be build on ignorance doubts or relativisim.

  11. 3.Mutual Exchange of Experience • There must be avenues for sharing experience and understanding between two or more partners with the intention of fostering mutual growth in experience and understanding.

  12. 4.Desire for Unity and Harmony • There must be a mutual search and common concern for the unity of humanity and harmony in the created Universe. • The transformation of the world into a more just and loving planet is a common desire that must be explored when dialoguing with other communities.
