Example of Domain, Goal, Indicators Domain: Approaches to Learning Goal: Shows curiosity and interest in learning new things and having new experiences Indicators: Engages in discussions and asks questions about new events and occurrences (e.g., “Why did this happen?”) Looks for new information and wants to know more about personal interests Uses familiar materials in new ways (e.g., materials from nature in an art project or for imaginative play)
Principles of Kindergarten Readiness Assessments* • No high stakes • Traits are not easily quantifiable • Strong preferences for criterion-referenced, observational (children performing tasks that are part of their daily experiences) assessment in naturalistic settings repeated across time • Multiple domains (measures of child development across at least 5 domains) • Teachers should be used as assessors *from Developing and Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Statewide Kindergarten Readiness presentation, Samuel Meisels, President Erikson Institute, Student Assessment Conference, June 2012
