Plate Mechanics • Has all FAIR-FOUL calls • Has all CATCH – NO CATCH calls • Has STRIKE – BALL . • Has call on Batter Runner TO 1st base. • Help with “pulled foot” request by base umpire Base Mechanics • Has calls on bases • Has tag up responsibilities • Help with check swing calls
There are 3 starting positions for the Base Umpire About ½ way between 2nd and the pitchers mound off the left shoulder of the pitcher About ½ way between 2nd and the pitchers mound off the right shoulder of the pitcher B B This is called the “B” position This is called the “C” position B This is called the “A” position An imaginary line from home plate by the edge of the mound P
When the Umpire is in field, he/she should stay in the “working area” to be ready to make calls The working area Stay in here until the ball takes you to the play P
PositioningNo runner From here the BU can move parallel to the base line to make calls at 1st Start 10-15 behind 1st base in foul territory B B R Start in the “A” position From here the BU can buttonhook inside to watch the tag at 1st and take runner to 2nd R P

Fly Ball position • Always try to move perpendicular to the ball • Move as far as needed to make the call • When the Fly ball is close to the foul line, the Plate umpire should be straddling the foul line. P • The Base Umpire has all tag up responsibilities. • If there are runners on 2nd and 3rd, the plate umpire has the catch and tag up at 3rd P
Fly Ball Coverage w/ runners RF LF SS 2nd B R Plate Umpire has ALL catch-no catch calls Move perpendicular to ball P
Bounding Ball Coverage w/ no runners PU has call to front of the base Plate Umpire makes call FAIR BALL B FOUL BALL Bounding ball Straddle foul line as quickly as possible P
Ground ball to Outfield w/ no runners Take runner to 2nd if he continues Take runner to 3rd if he continues Start in foul territory 12-18 feet behind 1st base Buttonhook inside to see BR touch 1st B B BR Plate Umpire trails runner to ½ way to start of running lane B Exit to the left of the catcher PU heads back home to take call P
Responsibilities and Positions for Ground Ball • Plate Umpire should be ready to move up the lines. • Base Umpire should always position himself / herself far enough away from the nearest fielder to avoid interfering with the play. • Plate Umpire has all catch no-catch responsibilities. • The Base Umpire has all tag up responsibilities. • Move toward the play
Ground ball to Infield w/ no runners Move enough to maintain 45o angle B Plate Umpire trails runner to ¼ way to start of running lane B P
Runner at 1st w/ ground ball to outfield Follow ball and watch for play at 2nd R If R continues to 3rd, be prepared to call play on BR at 2nd B R BR PU will take call at 3rd PU is prepared to go to home for call P B Go up 3rd base line but watch for obstruction call at 1st P
Runners on 1st & 2nd w/ ground ball to outfield BU has calls at all bases Be prepared to call play on R at 2nd or BR at 1st R B R Go up 3rd base line but watch for obstruction call at 1st P B P PU heads back home to take call
Runners on 1st & 2nd w/ ground ball to infield BU has calls at all bases Be prepared to call play on R at 2nd or BR at 1st R BU goes to play B R B P PU will stay at home plate
Runners on 1st & 3nd w/ ground ball to infield BU has calls at all bases Be prepared to call play on R at 2nd or BR at 1st B BU goes to play R R B P PU will stay at home plate
