No Country for Old Men and The Road

2. Tone Tone- The attitude the writer takes towards the subject of a piece of work. The Road The Road presents a depressed tone, which is evident throughout the entire book. The book is about a father and son who go on a journey for several months through a post-apocalyptic earth. Almost all human life is gone, so making the tone depressing is easy. No Country for Old Men The tone in No Country for Old Men is actually very relaxed. The book is about death, murder, and theft, but the author explains every event calmly. An example would be, “Chigurh stepped into the doorway and shot him in the throat with a load of number 10 shot. The size collectors use to take bird specimens.”

3. Imagery Imagery- The use of language to evoke a picture or a concrete sensation of a person, a thing, a place, or an experience. The Road“The country went from pine to live oak and pine. Magnolias. Trees as dead as any. He picked up one of the heavy leaves and crushed it in his hand to powder and let the powder sift through his fingers.” This quote displays a visual picture in my mind because it is very descriptive. It helps the reader create a mental picture of the characters surroundings. No Country for Old Men “Running, her blue nylon knapsack slung over one shoulder. She climbed in the truck and looked at him. Fifteen, sixteen. Red hair.” This quote helps the reader to get a better visual understanding of the girl. Rather then just saying the girl climbed into the truck, McCarthy described her to the readers.

4. Voice The Road and No Country for Old Men McCarthy likes to write in the form of how his characters actually talk, rather then writing in a more formal manner. For example, “Which I reckon some would take as meanin that the truth cant compete.” (No Country) He writes as though the characters are actually talking. The Road takes a different approach, mainly because the people are from a different time period. They talk in a more formal matter that people are more familiar with, rather then slang.

5. Irony Irony- A discrepancy between appearances and reality. The Road and No Country for Old Men Both The Road and No Country for Old Men present no forms of irony. These books are both right to the point and do not have any ironic twists in them.
