University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi Mississippi’s only academic health science center - over 9,100 employees Six health science schools serving 2,500 students University of Mississippi Health Care 5 hospitals 95 clinics 450 University Physicians in the faculty group practice of the School of Medicine

  4. University of Mississippi Medical Center: Schools School of Medicine School of Nursing School of Health Related Professions School of Dentistry School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences (12 programs including MD/PhD) School of Pharmacy, Clinical Affairs

School of Health Related Professions Baccalaureate programs: clinical laboratory sciences, cytotechnology, dental hygiene, health sciences, health informatics and information management, radiologic sciences; post-baccalaureate program in nuclear medicine. Professional graduate programs: master of health sciences, master of occupational therapy, master of health informatics and information management, doctor of physical therapy.

History and Background of Health Informatics Education at UMMC 1990s: Clinical health sciences (CHS) graduate program (evening classes) Students: Licensed/certified health care professionals Informatics electives available 2010: Master of Health Sciences Online, non-thesis, professional master’s Health Informatics track (six courses)

Master of Health Informatics and Information Management (MHIIM) Approved by Mississippi Board of Institutions of Higher Learning in November, 2011 (emerging program) 36 semester credit hours; program officially begins Fall 2012 Students transitioning from the Health Informatics track of the MHS to the MHIIM Two tracks in MHIIM: Health Informatics and Health Information Management

Curriculum: CAHIIM’s Three Facetsof Health Informatics • Information systems are concerned with such issues as information systems analysis, design, implementation, and management. • Informatics is concerned with such issues as the structure, function and transfer of information, socio-technical aspects of health computing, and human-computer interaction. • Information technology is concerned with such issues as computer networks, database and systems administration, security, and programming.
