Not composting • We are NOT talking about decentralized or small-scale food waste composting. • We are talking about large-scale centralized facilities installed to sterilize waste.
Why MBT? • All of our waste was going directly to dumpsites (more than 90% still does) • We installed many MBT facilities (In 1960s – 70s and again after the year 2000) • We hoped these plants will solve our problem
Failures • Assumptions and design • More than 50% organic waste • Rest can be sold • We’ll be left with no rejects • No design for rejects • Financial, policy, institutional, and other reasons
