Ciocio
PP3 Rework Completed • Because of insulation problem (see previous reports) ALL PP3 subracks of 30 units were: • disassembled • cleaned • glued properly • plastic layers (0.25 mm polyethylene terephthalate) inserted between all sides of PP3 units • Disconnection of all cables was completed at the end of August (by the SCT cabling/testing team) • 8000+ cables were hanging by the racks for several days • ~4000 PP3 units in B161 • Scott Moncrieff and Ashley French were at CERN for 4 weeks in September to do this rework • Many SCT collaborators participated in the re-assembling (THANKS!) • The last couple of weeks of September were very intense due to the late arrival of parts from Australia and running out of glue • All PP3 subracks back in the pit and all re-installed by October 1st • 70 % of cables are re-connected to PP3 A. Plan for PP3 Racks Rework Cables Reconnection & Testing(as of September 23) • Taking into account: • Connector in situ work • PS installation • Time to reconnect • Time to test whole chain A. Ciocio
Type IV Cables Installation • US side: • Type IV cables (2044+spares) from PP3 racks in the ATLAS cavern to PS racks in US15 • Installed in 2005 (as double harness) • Connectors in situ (March 06) • 9 PS racks (8 for barrel) installed and cables plugged into PS backplanes (July) • All type IV and type III (except for sector 15 EC) were connected to PP3 and test of whole chain done (in August) but then disconnected for PP3 rework • USA side: • Type IV from PP3 to USA15 installation completed (end of July) • All type IV were connected to PP3 (17 racks in UX15) but then disconnected for PP3 rework • extra spare cables just added in several racks (USA side) • All cables tested before and after installation A. Ciocio
Type IV Cables – cont’d • Connector in situ (CPE) • All connectors (2100+) in US15 completed in March • “saga” to resume work in USA15 finally it started on Aug 1st • 8 USA racks with Barrel cables completed last week • The last 3 racks (EC) by End-October A. Ciocio
Type IV Cables – cont’d • PS installation in USA15 (see next talk) • started 4 weeks ago • first plug-in/testing started on Sept 25 • Testing • 2 test systems are used for testing connector work and 2 test systems for PS/whole chain • 1 test system failed 2 weeks ago repaired after one week • Cables are first tested after connector work (plugged in PP3 – or not) to check connectors (rack by rack) • All cables are tested (whole chain) as they are plugged in row by row during PS connection • Test of whole chain in USA15 75% done now (sector 7, 9, 11) • Test of whole chain was performed on the US side (80 %) in end-July/August (but needs to be redone after PP3 rework) • Test of whole chain (again) in US15 started this week (sector 1, 3, 15) Test of sector 1, 3, 7, 9 will be completed in 2 weeks and partially sector 11 and 15 A. The cables were left to the cable tray 2 m below the rack (Sergei told me that they have already started to route them) A. Ciocio

Final Remarks • PP3 rework has added extra load to an already dense schedule of activities • The help received in the last few weeks has been crucial to make progress • 2 days per week (over the last 3 weeks) of 2 techs (Jean and Gilbert) from Geneva • Tony W. + Ellie D. • Janet, Stephen H., Richard B. • Nobu + Reisaburo • Last week 2 techs (Andy and Mike) from Manchester • This week 3 techs (Ines, Dieter, Patrick) from Freiburg • Next week 2 techs (Joe B. and Richard S.) from Oxford • October 30 (for 2 weeks) 3 students from Bergen Need additional technical people (two) from October 30 until mid-November • Consequences of PP3 rework and delay of connector in situ work added difficulties to keep up with the schedule • We are falling behind schedule with reconnecting to PP3 and testing of the whole chain (also due to the test system failure) • We are one week behind with connection to PS • USA15 was very crowed and hectic in the last 3 weeks Hoping to catch up in the next 2 weeks and be ready for the final connectivity test with Peter Phillips A.
