Anglicky v odborných předmětech"Support ofteachingtechnicalsubjects in English“ Tutorial: Engineering Technology Topic: Plastic I. - Introduction Prepared by: Ing. VladislavZelinka Projekt Anglicky v odborných předmětech, CZ.1.07/1.3.09/04.0002 je spolufinancován Evropským sociálním fondem a státním rozpočtem České republiky.
Briefly: • Plastics belong among technical materials. • Plastics have been modern only for century an half but their exploitation has been rapidly increasing. • The base for most of the plastics are hydrocarbons originally from petroleum, natural gas or recycled. • Engineers are less interested in their exact chemical composition than their usage.
Production of plastics: (from monomers to macromolecule) is either: • polymerization, • polycondensation or • polyadisation.
Plastics can be classified as: theromplastics, reactoplastics or elastomers. THERMOplasticcanbe formed and welded – by heat. Before that they are rigid. REACTOplastic (earlier „thermosetting resin “) on the contrary cannot be formed or welded. They stay rigid all the time. ELASTOmers also cannot be hot formed or welded. They are ELASTIC all the time.
Some of the well-known plastics: TERMOplastics: • PE (PolyEthylen) – LDPE, piping, tanks, bearings, films, HDPE, ... • PP (PolyPropylene) – tanks (washing machines, gas tank), car parts,... • PVC (PolyVinylChlorid) - windows, drains, cabels, hoses,... • PS (PolyStyrene) – insulation (heat, concussions),... • PC (PolyCarbonate) – unbreakable, light covers, rulers, ... • PA (PolyAmide) – nylon, silon, aramid, kevlar, ... • PMMA (...perspex) – googles, optical covers, ... • PTFE (...teflon) – grease, skid, surface of dishes, ... • PBT (…) - printed circuit board, ... • POM (…) - face gear, chains, bolts, ... • multicomposite– cases of electrical appliances,... REACTOplastics • EP (Epoxy Rosin) – glues, paints, adhesives, ... • PUR (Polyurethane Resin) – gear wheel, tackle, steering wheel, ... ELASTOmers • SBR – tires, seal, boots, silentblocks, ... • SIR – electrical feeder cable, sealing joints, breast fillings, ... • PUR – tackle, gear wheel, skating boots, ... • NR (natural rubber)– erasing rubber, balls, shoes, ...
Summary: • Plastics belong among important technical materials. • Exploitation of plastics is increasing rapidly - even though they have been known for century and half. • Simple hydrocarbons (originally from petroleum, natural gas or recycled) are basis for most of the plastics. • Engineers are less interested in their exact chemical composition than their usage. • Strojaře
ACTIVITY I.: Decide and choose the best solution of the problem: 1.) Product is going to be used under very low temperature (-60 °C), its shape is very simple (sphere) and size is enormous (25 meters). Will you use plastics? Yes / No / It isn´t easy to determine 2.) Product is going to be used under very high temperatures (850 °C), developed deterioration will be necessary to dress very often (daily) and it still must have shiny surface. Will you use plastics? Yes / No / It isn´t easy to determine
ACTIVITY II.: Decide and choose the best solution of the problem : 3.) Product is going to be used under the common temperatures (+20 °C), its shape is quite complicated and size is usual (max 1 meter). Will you use plastics? Yes / No / It isn´t easy to determine 4.) Product is going to be used under common temperatures (+20 °C), developed deterioration won´t be necessary to dress and it still must have shiny surface. Will you use plastics? Yes / No / It isn´t easy to determine
