What does data logging mean?
Examples of data logging in action. Medical: Measuring your heart beat rate over a period of time (Cardiograph) Monitoring your temperature during an infection. Scientists: Take readings during an experiment to see how something reacts.
Environmentalists: Take reading of pollution levels to monitor the air/water quality. Seismic activity under ground – investigating earthquakes. Noise pollution around an airport.
Learning Intentions: To learn how to take readings using a data logger. To read the data onscreen and explain what the readings are telling you. To collect data remotely and download it on to the computer. To label graphs correctly to inform the reader. To interpret the data you collect and draw conclusions.
Sound Heart rate Investigating Light Temperature
I think the best way to display this data is….. because…. Datalogging : Worksheet 1: Meters Use the data for clapping. Write or draw the data onto the meters as it would look on the screen.
Datalogging Class Noise Chart You will take 6 readings. The readings will record different levels of sound. When you have completed the recording write them on the chart.
Using the external temperature probes
Decide what you will do with your probe for the 2 minutes because you will need to label the graph later. Record your actions in the grid below. Now label your graph and interpret the results.
Questions about your temperature experiment. Which position was the warmest? Which position was the coolest? How long did it take for the temperature to change from warmest to coolest? Why did the temperature change when you rubbed the tip of the probe?
Using the Timing Mats
Possible activities How long can I stay in the air when I jump? How fast can I hop, walk, run?How many jumps can I do in a minute? These mats are on/off switches, and are activated by stepping on to them; one mat starts the timer, the other stops the timer.
Possible activities • Set up your own experiments using the data loggers to answer these questions. • How does physical activity affect your heart rate? • Monitor your heart rate for 5 minutes: • While sitting down quietly. • After walking slowly, • After running on the spot. • Does eating chocolate • have an effect on your heart rate? • What is the effect of different types of • music on people’s heart rate?
