COLLABORATION AS BEST PRACTICES IN SIMULATION TERRY ROSS, RN, MS, WOCN OHSU SCHOOL OF NURSING, KLAMATH FALLS
THE SITE OHSU School of Nursing Oregon Institute of Technology Sky Lakes Medical Center Cascade East Family Practice
THE PROCESS Identify the “need” Identify the stakeholders OHSU Senior Nursing Students OIT Respiratory Junior Students Cascade East (AHEC)Residents Klamath County Fire Department Identify the learning outcomes Identify the resources
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. To recognize the contributions and strengths that each health care provider brings to the team in a very high stress situation 2. To understand how essential good communication and collaboration is necessary to provide optimal patient care.
THE PREPARATION Assigned Reading Orientation to the SIM theater Mock Code Skills Lab
MOCK CODE SKILLS LAB Starting the Day
MOCK CODE SKILL STATIONS AIRWAY MANAGEMENT NAME THAT RHYTHM AND EKG PLACEMENT
AED AND PAD PLACEMENT DEFIBRILATION WITH THE ZOLL AND JOULES CALCULATION
RECORD THAT CODE EMERGENCY DRUGS
MOCK CODE SKILLS DEBRIEFING and afternoon SIMULATION PREPARATION
THE PERFORMERS 2 respiratory students at head of bed (green uniforms) 4 nursing students (blue uniforms) 2 in charge of CPR 1 recording 1 giving meds 2 residents in street clothes 2 nursing faculty as facilitators
THE PERFORMANCE 8 year old female with a history of asthma was found on the playground of her elementary school unresponsive and not breathing. The SIM begins with the team awaiting patient’s arrival from EMS Transport Start the Simulation
THE EVALUATION What we saw
What we heard 40 out of 45 participants returned a written evaluation “I think all disciplines learned from one another and we were able to establish the different roles. I would like to continue working with the other disciplines.” Nursing Student “I thought working with the nurses was very helpful, because we were able to collaborate and assist each other in learning.” Respiratory Student
“This was effective at working with the three disciplines. This was a very realistic representation. The recreation of the ambiance is excellent.” Resident
“Thank you” “doing this sort of activity again would be great and helpful to everyone involved.” “I would love to have this type of practice more often” “Thanks. Please contact us if you want resident in the future” “Keep doing this” “I really liked having the input from the residents and MD’s during the debriefing.” “It was a good experience I wish we could do this more often with other disciplines.” “I’m very impressed with the interdisciplinary collaboration! An awesome idea plus the articles we read to prepare spoke highly of practicing simulations with interdisciplinary teams.”
THE FUTURE We will do more Figure out the economics Mentor disciplines Writing simulations Producing simulations Preparing students Debriefing strategies Involve more disciplines
