SIUE School of Business Travel Study to China May 6-20, 2007 Shanghai, Suzhou, & Xiamen
General Trip Information • Led by Professors Tom Douglas and Tom Lavallee. • Students will travel to Shanghai, Suzhou, & Xiamen to visit US and local Chinese businesses as well as cultural sites to learn about the economic, cultural, political, and human resource issues of global business.
Local Culture and Businesses • How are the cities we visit different from each other in terms of: • Marketing • Resources • Labor • Infrastructure/city planning • Politics • Quality of life/cultural aspects/food
Sites Previously Visited • Shanghai • Business: Illinois Trade Office, Emerson, Tri-onics • Cultural: JinMao Tower, Yu Gardens, French Concession Area • Suzhou • Andrew Telecommunications, Contemporary Controls, Sloan Valve, Emerson Processing Facility • Cultural: Master of Nets Garden, canal walk • Xiamen • Business: Wal-Mart, Trust-Mart, Jinlong - Golden Dragon Bus manufacturing site, Coca-Cola and local factories (2004 knife, shoe, clothing, stone) • Cultural: Gulang Island, Nanpu Temple, visits with students in Xiamen University
Travel Study to China • Travel fee for students is $2900 which covers transportation, visas, lodging, tour admissions, and one meal a day. • Application & $600 deposit is due by Friday January 19th.
GBA 489 Travel Study To China • Enrollment in the 3-credit hour course, GBA 489, starting March 16, 2007-April 27, 2007 is required. • Preparation for the travel to China will include: learning some Chinese language, culture, history, politics and business practices.
