  2. Introduction • NWS products are produced by: • 122 Weather Forecast Offices • National Centers • More than 80 different products • Text based • Disseminated over several different systems NWS Hazards Dissemination

  3. Introduction • National Weather Service disseminates hazards information via: • NOAAPORT satellite System • NOAA Weather Wire Service • Emergency Managers Information Network • NOAA Weather Radio • Internet services (web, ftp, etc) NWS Hazards Dissemination

  4. Architecture Goals • Provide a robust dissemination infrastructure • Not dependant on a single source/technology • Provide several different access methods • Not only backup, but also for different operational and customer needs NWS Hazards Dissemination

New and Emerging • Experiments in putting traditional products in XML to assist machine parsing and processing • Experiments in putting traditional products in wireless formats to better reach responders in the field • Integration with responder systems like the DHS DMIS project • Experiments with GIS dissemination via Internet mapping services NWS Hazards Dissemination

XML • Experiments with XML • XML – a markup language, similar to HTML, designed to aim machine/computer processing of data • Tests in two formats based in XML: • Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) • Really Simple Syndication (RSS) • Tests include TPC/NHC products, NWS Watch/Warnings • Currently only over Internet, but possible dissemination via NOAAPORT • Overall positive feedback • http://www.nws.noaa.gov/alerts/ NWS Hazards Dissemination

Wireless • Experiments that place traditional text products in formats accessible via cellphones, PDAs and other wireless devices • Tests include TPC/NHC and some forecast office products in selected locations • Some have progressed from experimental to official status • Tests use the WAP format • No national program at the moment • Positive feedback NWS Hazards Dissemination

DHS DMIS System • Disaster Management Interoperability Services (DMIS) operated by DHS • Part of the President’s Disaster Management Egov Initiative • DMIS provides interoperability services to the responder community • Integration of NWS watch/warnings, current observations, and digital forecasts into the DMIS suite of tools NWS Hazards Dissemination

GIS/IMS Experiment • NWS conducted an experimental Internet Mapping Service (IMS) website during the 2003 hurricane season • Layered graphical displays of active watch/warnings, projected storm tracks, satellite imagery and other GIS type information • Proposed 2004 system, expanded to cover all of US during severe storm season was not funded • Foresee significant technical challenges, specially during weather events NWS Hazards Dissemination
