Partners in Education A collaborative effort between chapters of the National Association of Health Underwriters and the NAHU Education Foundation - June, 2011 -
What is the NAHU Education Foundation? • A 501(c)3 non-profit • Created by NAHU in 1992 • Educates the general public about the private health insurance system • Promotes private sector solutions to controlling the cost of health care
What have we done lately? • Funded a study about health insurance exchanges • Produced a series of printed consumer guides: • Turning 65? What you need to know about Medicare • Guide to Health Insurance • Workplace Wellness Programs • Produced a series of videos: • The Cost of Health Care • Wellness • Illness Prevention
Produce and distribute messages Specific messages to targeted audiences including consumers, businesses and policymakers Work with corporate partners to refine and focus these messages Raise funds to pay for the cost of producing and distributing messages Solicitation of Sustaining Memberships Corporate Partnerships Grants from other non-profits and entities Two Important Missions of the NAHUEF
Sustaining Memberships… • Fully tax deductible contributions from both members and non-members of NAHU • Grass roots organization similar to how HUPAC works • The NAHUEF board is the only infrastructure we have and so we need assistance from NAHU chapters to “make it happen!”
How does the Partners in Education Program work? • Opportunity for state and local chapters to: • Distribute EF messages to local consumers, businesses and others • Raise funds locally for support of the EF • Our goals: • Provide local and state chapters with content that raises awareness of private sector initiatives to improve health and contain costs of health care services • Raise $100,000 from among 20,000 members of NAHU annually
How does the Partners in Education Program work? • A state or local chapter agrees to: • Designate one board member as the NAHU Education Foundation Coordinator for the chapter, and; • Distribute or promote EF products at least four times per year, and; • Obtain contributions from the chapter equal to: • $5/member/year = Sustaining Level • $10/member/year = Sponsoring Level • What’s in it for the state or local chapter?????
How does the Partners in Education Program work? • How about a way to fund the cost of sending representatives to attend NAHU’s Capitol Conference or Annual Convention… • Sustaining Chapter level • One free registration to either Capitol Conference or Annual Convention • Sponsoring Chapter level • Two free registrations to either Capitol Conference or Annual Convention • For each free registration earned by a chapter, the chapter’s name will be placed in a drawing for a $500 travel voucher
What’s really important? • Getting the message out to the public that: • The private health care system works • There are ways to reduce the cost of health care through private innovations • Consumers have resources to help them obtain the best benefits at the right price • NAHU Education Foundation must work in a grass roots manner to push these messages out to consumers, the ultimate beneficiaries of the educational program • NAHU members can make tax deductible contributions to help preserve their role in the delivery of products and services to the general public • NAHU Education Foundation is your source for educational materials to help you get things done IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY
