  2. Vivaldi • He was a composer of the baroque period. • The Four Seasons, a series of four violin concerti, is his most popular work. • He is also known for writing over 500 concertos, sacred choral works, and more than 40 operas.

  3. Vivaldi • Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice. On the day of his birth, a devastating earthquake shattered the town, and his mother dedicated him to priesthood. • At 25, he became an official priest. By this time, he was already well known for his technical skills on the violin. • Vivaldi suffered from asthma, and that stopped him from playing wind instruments. His asthma came in the way of saying mass at the church, and he was reprieved of his duties as a priest. He then began teaching violin at an orphanage, and his career as a musician began.

  4. Vivaldi • He composed most of his works at the orphanage. • Vivaldi was influential in the baroque to classical era transition. He is mostly known for his changes to the concerto, adding harmonies and themes to the originally formal and rhythmic structure. • Bach was very influenced by Vivaldi. He transcribed several of his works, many for solo keyboard. • Vivaldi’s music was largely ignored during the later musical eras, until it was rediscovered in the 20th century.

  5. GF Handel • George Frideric Handel was born in Germany, the same year as Bach and Scarlatti. • He is famous for his operas and concertos. His most well known work is the oratorio Messiah, with the Hallelujah chorus. The bulk of his work was vocal music. • Handel also used previously uncommon instruments in his works, like the lute, trombone, clarinet, double bassoon, and horns.

  6. Handel • He initially studied law, and after realizing he was very unsatisfied, Handel accepted a position as the violinist and harpsichordist in an opera house. Handel wrote several operas, all of which became very popular. • Much of his work was composed for King George of Britain, as he was in charge of music in the English court. • At age 52, Handel suffered from a stroke that paralyzed his right arm, preventing him from performing. After six weeks in a spa in Germany, Handel completely recovered, and began performing again.

  7. Handel • Handel was well respected by fellow composers Mozart and Beethoven. When Handel was visiting Germany, Bach attempted to meet with him, but Handel declined. • He used figured bass and counterpoint in his pieces, typical characteristics of music in the Baroque era. • One of his last performances was Music for the Royal Fireworks. 12,000 people attended, and three people died during the performance, including one of the trumpeters.
