  1. Problems with FPTP voting (first past the post)

  2. Democracy King Lion and lioness are both unhappy with the way he is running his kingdom. The citizens want more say in what’s going on He gives up his crown and It is now to be an elected office. Queen lioness stays in power and sets up two rules to win. Each citizen has one vote The candidate with the most votes wins This system is often called FTTP or First Past The Post voting This system seems fair at first but it’s a terrible

  3. First election in the animal kingdom There’s seven candidates

  4. 9% The results are as follows Leopard wins! 18% 19% 13% 20% 15% 6%

  5. Problem 1 Tiger won but only 20% of the population wants him 80% of people want someone else. Imagine what would happen if there was more than 7 candidates This is called minority rule

  6. Problem 2 -An unavoidable 2 party system given enough time

  7. 9% This time around people have a beter idea what’s going to happen Expecialy the people who voted for the candidets that have no chance of wining. -Turtle And -Snake 18% 19% 13% 20% 15% 6%

  8. Turtle voters aren’t very happy under leopard rule and decide to back the candidet that has the most chance of wining. Gorilla 18% 19% +9%= 28% 13% 20% 15% 6%

  9. Snake voters WANT to vote for tiger because they have the most in common with him But gorilla is running a negative campaign agents leopard and the snake voters would be very unhappy under gorilla rule They vote strategically and support leopard 18% 19% +9%= 28% Gorrila wins the votes and is now crowned king 13% 20%+6%=26% 15% Snake and turtle now drop out of the race

  10. 18% This time owl voters decide their candidate can’t win They are less ideological then the rest of the animal kingdom They don’t like leopard or gorrila Owl voters split their votes, voting agents the person don’t like rather than voting for the candidate they support 28%+5%=33% 26%+8%= 34% Owl voters drops out of the race 15%

  11. Monkey agrees with gorilla on few issues but they really don’t like leopard Tiger agrees with leopard on few issues but they really don’t like gorilla The final vote turns out like this Monkey voters vote for gorilla 18% 33% +18%= 51% Gorilla wins and is now ruler of the 2 party animal kingdom 34% +15%=49% Tiger voters vote for leopard 15%

  12. Because of the sway in the voting, either candidate could win one year and the other the next but it’s still the same two party's wining 49% 51%

  13. Only 34% of the population wants either one of these party's to be in office The same two partys keep wining but the voters havn’t changed their mind about who that want as ruler
