A Basic Budget Rent (with a roommate) Gas, Electric – Utilities Water, Sewer Phone or cell Food – groceries, sundries, cleaning supplies Appliances (micro, TV, Iron and Board, Stereo, Toaster, Can Opener, pots, dishes, glasses, silverware) TV – cable. movie rental Music – CD player, CD’s Car payments Gas and maintenance Insurance – car, renter’s, medical Clothes School Expenses Gifts Toiletries Laundry $300 Rent $50 - Utilities $15 – water/sewer $40 – cell plan $400 – food (groceries & fast food) $100 – credit card payment on appliances you have to buy $50 - cable $20 - music $300- car payment $150- gas and maintenance $75, $15, $10 – Insurance $200 - clothes $40 – Misc. expenses $50 - Gifts $50 – toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc.) $40 – laundry Total $1905 Net + $381 (Taxes - 20%) Gross $2286 x 12 = $27,432/ year

Senior Year Timeline Fall/ Winter: Take SAT or ACT (if you haven’t already done so) Begin researching min. 3 colleges Attend Henry County College Fair (9/25/07) Request and gather recommendations letters Apply to at least 3 colleges Visit post-secondary schools Re-take GQE (if necessary) Apply for scholarships! Apply for DOE pin # *Register w/ Selective Service Spring: Attend Financial Aid Night January 16, 2007 @ 6:30pm (Cafeteria) Complete FAFSA form Visit more colleges Re-take SAT or ACT if necessary Compare preliminary financial aid packages Make final decision about college choice Graduate!

College Visits & Job Shadowing You have 3 total days to use during Junior & Senior years Cannot use more than 2 days for Job Shadowing Visit Procedure: You are responsible to call & set-up visit beforehand. Obtain both a “College Visitation/ Job Shadowing” (blue form) and “Teacher Approval” (yellow form) forms “Teacher Approval” form must be signed and turned in to Mrs. Muse before visit

    10. College Visits & Job Shadowing Once “Teacher” form is turned it, an administrator will sign the “College Visitation/ Job Shadowing” form. Have parent or guardian sign “College Visitation/ Job Shadowing” form, take it on the visit with you & obtain signature from an official. Return “College Visitation/ Job Shadowing” form to Mrs. Muse to change absence to Excused.

    11. College Applications Henry County College Fair will be held on Tuesday September 25, 2007 at New Castle Chrysler High School cafeteria from 6:30 – 8:00pm. Apply early to at least 3 post-secondary schools! College addresses & phone #s are available in the Guidance Office You may submit an application to college before you have taken the ACT or SAT.

    12. College Apps. . .continued If you need a letter of recommendation from any faculty or staff, DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! Be neat on your college application Consider applying on-line if possible Process: Complete app, give to me for counselor portion along with payment or mail app with payment yourself.

    13. Choosing the right College! Five major things to consider: 1. Academics 2. Location 3. Student Life 4. Atmosphere 5. Cost

    14. 1. Academics Based on the ‘selectivity’ of the school, which can range from ‘most difficult’ to ‘noncompetitive’. Includes the quality of instruction. Ratio of students to teaching faculty. % of faculty members with the highest degree in their field. Amount of $ spent per student on instruction. Graduate studies available, ability to work with a doctoral student, get published, intern

    15. Academics: ‘College Perks’ Flexibility in course selection Off-campus programs International Study Programs Number of Majors Degree Requirements Internships Job Placement Services Number of computers available to students The financial resources and facilities

    16. 2. Location - Five Questions: In what part of the country do I want to be? How far away from home do I want to be? What is the cost of returning to home? Do I need to be close to a city? Would I concentrate better in a setting that is more rural or more suburban? Small town or large, big fish in small pond or vice-versa.

    17. 3. Atmosphere-What do you like? What does the campus feel like? What sports, organizations, activities are there that interest me? Is the campus too big, too small or just right? Religious Affiliation Chapel attendance? Public Vs. Private Family Ties Quiet or Deluged with activities I always thought college would be like…

    18. 4. Student Life – Do I fit in? Weekend Schedule Academically Rigorous Curriculum? Dorm Food: Will I end up eating out all the time? Campus Resources – Learning Center It’s all Greek to me: Sororities/Fraternities Scene Campus Visit!! Best time - Fall Break & Spring Break.

    19. 5. Cost: Things to Consider State vs. Private – Ex. Attend Ivy Tech or Vincennes then transfer. Room, Board, Book Fees Mandatory Fees: Use of Recreation Facilities, Technology, Parking Permits, etc… Work Study Check out Tuition Payment Plans

    20. E-Transcript Tri is taking part in a new state-wide initiative which will allow students to request electronic copies of their transcripts be sent to schools of their choice. $0 for transcripts to be sent to schools in Indiana, $5 for out-of-state schools. Requires that students have a valid e-mail address.

    21. E-Transcript process Student creates an online account by visiting www.docufide.com or by using the link on the main page of the Guidance webpage. You must have a valid e-mail address to create an account. Student logs in and requests a copy of their transcript be sent to the school of their choice.

    22. E-Transcript process cont. . . If the student is requesting a transcript be sent to a school in Indiana, there is no cost. If a student wants to send a transcript to a school outside of Indiana, the cost is $5.00.(Requires a credit card for payment). An e-mail is sent to Mr. Riedner or Ms. Bowen notifying them that a transcript has been requested. Once a transcript has been sent, the student receives an e-mail confirmation.

    24. ACT & SAT Next test is Oct. 27th w/ regular registration deadline of Sept. 21st Cost is $43.00 Register for ACT Plus Writing! CEEB code for Tri High is 152-045 Score is out of 36 (6 sub-scores and overall composite) SAT® Next test is Oct. 6th w/ regular registration deadline of Sept. 14th. Cost is $41.50 Same CEEB code for SAT Fee waivers are available! See Mr. Riedner Receive three sub-scores from 0-800 (2400 max total)

    25. ACT & SAT cont. . . Registration materials are available in the Guidance Office Dates for upcoming tests are located in Mr. Miller’s room and in the Guidance Office Register by mail or online the first time, by phone any time thereafter Can take tests as many times as you want. SAT will combine best scores from each of the three sub-areas

College Financial Aid & Scholarship info Tri will host a Financial Aid Night January 16, 2008 All students are encouraged to use Free online scholarship searches such as www.fastweb.com Go to the Tri website ? Guidance Office ? “Scholarships” for other links We will post a list of scholarships in the Guidance Office as well as in Mr. Miller’s room

    27. Scholarship List This is the format for the scholarship list. Pay attention to the due dates on the right hand side. Scholarships with asterisks* indicate a Henry County Community Foundation Scholarship.

    29. Financial Aid cont. . . All students who plan on attending a post-secondary school (2 or 4-year college, Tech or Business College, Proprietary school) must complete a FAFSA FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid More info later All males need to register with the selective service to be eligible for financial aid

    30. NCAA Clearinghouse If you plan on playing Division I or II athletics, you must apply for eligibility through the NCAA Clearinghouse. Talk to your coach for more info We will discuss this in more detail during your Senior Interview
