Russia – EU seminar on rail transport research,16-18 October. Moscow, VNIIZhT “Developing intelligent transport management systems on the basis of modern digital telecommunications and satellite technologies, specialist information and control systems” Presentation by: Sergei Alexandrovich Vinogradov Head of Traction, Traffic & Computerisation Department, VNIIZhT, Candidate of Technical Sciences
Objectives of the ELBRUS automatic management system for freight train traffic on railway routes • Calculation of the daily forecast energy-saving train traffic schedule • Automatic transfer of the forecast schedule to the supervisory control system – the “Ural-VNIIZhT” (GID-Ural) completed traffic schedule • Transfer of the train traffic schedule to locomotives • Monitoring fulfilment of the traffic schedule • Analysis of fulfilment of the forecast daily energy-saving train traffic schedule Russian Railway Transport Research Institute

Parameters for formulating the daily schedule • The following parameters are taken into account when the daily schedule is calculated: • the passenger and suburban traffic schedule • the quantity and specialisation of station yards • traffic speed restrictions • intervals between trains • parameters of trains in operation • priorities of each category of trains • time made up by passenger trains • technological breaks for repair and recovery work in block stations and at stations • station-to-station journey times for optimal energy consumption. Economic efficiency • Efficiency is achieved by means of: • harmonising traffic management and supervisory management • increasing the quality of fulfilment of the train traffic schedule • increasing section and route speeds of traffic • electricity and fuel savings in train traction Results of an experiment to organise train traffic according to energy-saving schedules on the section from Vkhodnaya (West Siberian Railways) to Chelyabinsk (South Ural Railways) from 15 March to 15 April 2011 Electricity savings for freight and passenger trains were – 22.8 million roubles; About 80%of the total number of freight trains departed at energy-optimal schedule times; The total economic benefit was - 37.63 million roubles.
