Contemporary Learning Center (clc) History The building that houses CLC was constructed in 1925. The building originally was Johnston Junior High School. When Johnston moved to Meyerland in September 1959, Miller Junior High School opened in Johnston's former location. Miller closed and was replaced by CLC.
Contemporary Learning Center (CLC) CLC is a secondary school located in Houston, Texas, in the United States. CLC, which serves grades 7 through 12, is a part of the Houston Independent School District. CLC is located south of Midtown, west of the Third Ward, and north of the Houston Museum District. CLC was founded in 1973 as a pilot project under the Emergency School Aid Act (ESAA). The rational for the CLC model was to create an educational environment that would motivate disenfranchised students who were not motivated by traditional educational environments. The philosophy that would govern the program emphasized Individually Guided Instruction (IGE).
Contemporary Learning Center (CLC) Because no educational system can be effective if it remains stagnant, changes have occurred since the inception of this unique program. The school has become more traditional and has incorporated an accelerated program. Students have an opportunity to earn 10-12 credits per school year; whereby students can advance two grade levels in one year. Though change is continuous, the administration and staff work closely with district officials to insure that the CLC program, through its accelerated program mode, continues to provide a viable alternative for students classified as at-risk of failing to earn a high school diploma. CLC stands as an Institution of high standards producing productive people by cultivating better students for a better society.
Contemporary Learning Center (CLC) Implementation required a staff that possessed strong interpersonal skills and an ability to be flexible and creative while at the same time be able to guide students in modifying behavior and enhancing academic skills. Originally, the school was opened to students in grades 9-12. Classes began in two rooms at Miller Junior High School while temporary buildings were being moved to the site. In 1976 the program moved to its present site. The success of the High School program prompted a pilot for a Middle School. In 1980, the Middle School moved to the 3rd Floor.

Mission statement Contemporary Learning Center’s Mission, both Middle & High School, is to create an environment of positive change in the lives of students so that they will be equipped to positively impact the world.
VISION STATEMENT Ensuring Every Student is College/Career Bound by focusing on teaching and continual learning, doing the right work that when combined with the efforts of students, parents, business partners, community leaders, and staff, our students will develop into profound, understanding citizens empowered to change the world and become trailblazers of success in our global community.

CLC HIGH SCHOOL During the 2008-2009 school year, 514 students were enrolled at CLC • 57% African-American • 41% Hispanic • 1% White • 1% Asian • No Native –Americans were enrolled during that school year. • 85% of students qualified for free or reduced lunch.
CLC MIDDLE SCHOOL During the 2008-2009 school year, 177 students were enrolled at CLC • 60% African-American • 38% Hispanic • 0% White • 1% Asian • No Native –Americans were enrolled during that school year. • 90% of students qualified for free or reduced lunch.
