Minority Organ Donation: The Power Of An Educated Community Authors: Clive O. Callender, MD - Presenter Patrice Miles International Society for Organ Donation and Procurement (ISODP) Buenos Aires, Argentina November 2011
METHODS • 1978 – Scarcity of minority donors, especially African Americans. • For 4 decades - Involved in a grass roots effort emphasizing community education combined with mass media. • Minority donation rates increased exponentially. • Initiated with $500 grant from Howard University and subsequent NIH funding totaling more than $10 million between 1993 & 2008.
RESULTS Between 1990 and 2008: Minority Donor Percentages Organ Donors Per Million 53 30 15 8
CONCLUSION • Investment of $10 million may seem substantial. • Cost benefit ratio associated with cost savings of $135,000 per donor. • It is small when compared to more than $200 million saved by kidney donors alone with: • Expected increase in minority donors percentage to 35% by 2010 or 1,750 minority donors.
SUMMARY • Since 1978, a proven methodology of community grass roots outreach combined with mass media has been able to increase African American donation rates. • The proven methodology in the African American community has been applied to other minority populations thereby increasing minority donation rates among Hispanics/Latinos, Asians and other minority populations.
