  1. Subjective Complements: Predicate Adjectives and Predicate Nominatives(Nouns) Five Easy Steps to Identification

  2. Step 1 Find the subject and verb.

  3. Step 2 Ask yourself this: “Is the verb a linking verb?’ Linking verbs: am, is, are, was, were, been, being, be, and certain other verbs (see next slide) *Linking verbs can have helping verbs.*

  4. Other Possible Linking Verbs: Grow Look Prove Remain Smell Sound Taste Turn Stay Get Appear Feel Seem Become Keep Prove Resemble

  5. Step 3 Look behind the verb. Determine the parts of speech of the words behind the verb.

  6. Step 4 If there is a noun, ask yourself this: “Does this noun rename the subject?” Yes? It’s a PN! Stop here! No? Go to step 5.

  7. Step 5 If there is an adjective nearby, ask yourself this: “Does this adjective describe the subject?” Yes? It’s a PA!
