Summary • Sixteen year old Col Porpentine is being groomed as the next commander of Wordshaker, a juggernaut where elite families live on the upper decks while the Filthies struggle to survive below. When Col meets Riff, a female filthy on the run he discovers the hidden injustices of his society and fights for people’s freedom.

  6. Main Points • Main character: innocent, naïve. Lived a very sheltered life. Completely oblivious to what happens in the shadows. • Apart from only a few who know, no one knows that the “Filthies” are humans (and that they can talk, think, speak, etc.) • Since Col meets Riff and experiences other Filthies, he is cast from society at one point and he realizes a lot the society he lived in and about social class. • The Filthies plan a revolution to overthrow the humans in command

Character Development Col Porpentine Riff • Next in line to be the commander of Worldshaker. • Initially believes all Filthies are dirty creatures who can’t feel, think, talk etc., but changes his mind after meeting Riff. • Trys to learn more about the Filthies • Falls down the food chute, down below to where the Filthies live • Joins the revolution • A female filthy who taken from Below to be used as a servant from the wealthy who live above. • Leads the Revolutionary Council to overthrow the people in power. • Initially believes Filthies are superior to other humans but changes her mind after meeting Col

  9. Character Development Sir MormusPorpentine Lady EbonliaPorpentine • Col’s grandfather and current commander of Worldshaker. As commander he has a loud boastful nature. • He knows all the atrocities that happen on the Worldshaker and he wants them to be kept that way. • Status and power are so important to him that he is willing to blow up Worldshaker along with everyone on board to have his way • Character did a complete 360 from beginning to end. • Col’s grandmother (sweet, kind appearance). Always cares about Col. Plans family events and attends social gatherings • She knows a lot about the secrets behind the Filithies and she often starves her Menial (Filthies turned servants) to death out of amusement.

  10. My Thoughts • Looks can be deceiving • I recommend this book if you are looking for a light read. • The story has a good plot, the story develops very well and it has a multi layered story line.
