  2. The History • 1543 – Copernicus stated the theory: “The earth as the center”. Mars’s mystery still kept secret. • 1609- Johannes Kepler investigated planetary orbits and also stated theory: “The sun as focus”. • 1609- Galileo examined Mars with a telescope. • Mid 17th – Giovanni Cassini calculated planets’ rotation by observing them.

Mars--great summary--sir • Similar surface as earth (seas, dunes and marshes), but no life found. • The surface condition had not changed in more that three billion years (suggested by the pristine craters) • Avalanches and dust storms observed by camera. • Seasonal sublimation of dry ice caused erosion and movement. • Volcanoes, which the greatest is Olympic Mons, a system of canyons (Valles Marineris)

  4. Visions • Percival Lowell (astronomer) stated Mars as dying planet with an increasing desiccation. His drawings were appreciated by most astronomers. • H. G. Wells created “The War of the worlds” which told about earth-invading . This fiction presented earth as a target by earth-invaders because of its attractiveness. • A minor layer of science fiction showed Mars as the site of Christian afterlife.

  6. Developing of Mars image • All visions were swept into oblivion by the photograph of Mars taken by Mariner 4 on July, 1965, 6,000 miles away. • No canals, no cities, no water, no erosion. Every details gave conclusion that Mars is more similar to moon than to earth. • In 1969, two more Mariner flyby were launched and sent back 57 images. • Mariner 9 in 1971 sent 7,000 images which sketched a more detailed image of Mars.

Developing of Mars image • Now the Phoenix mission with complicate arm, scoop, imagers, and analyzers, bring us more specify image of Mars and improve human’s knowledge about space especially Mars, the god of wars.
