What is Pre-Pharmacy? • The Pre-Pharmacy program at UMCP is not a degree-granting program but it prepares you for entry into pharmacy school. • The program can not guarantee admission to a professional school. • Special Note: Attending the University of Maryland, College Park does not automatically grant you admission into any of the University of Maryland Pharmacy Schools. • Declaring no major? Try a 2-4 program • Can finish pre-requisites in 3 years or after a degree • What majors are most of us? • You can be any major that you like as long as you complete the pre-requisites.

Our Mission Statement • The Pre-Pharmacy Society at the University of Maryland, College Park is an organization run by students who serve to support and provide information for prospective students in the pharmacy-related careers. The Pre-Pharmacy Society strives to provide a network of resources through informational meetings, field trips, guest speakers, and community services. These resources will encourage prospective students to promote dedication, leadership, hard work and professionalism for their future pharmacy-related careers.

Why should you come to our meetings? • Learn about the pharmacy application process • Learn about current pharmaceutical issues/news • Get advice and all your questions answered • Good for applications • Leadership position • Service activities • Connections to pre-pharmacy advisor, universities, Kaplan • No point in joining a club if you are not going to participate! • IMPORTANT HANDOUTS • Make new friends!

  8. Active Membership Requirements • 3 Meetings per semester • 3 Hours of Community Service per semester • Please do not wait until till the end of the semester to fulfill your community service hours • Exceptions will not be made

Role of a Pharmacist • Bottom Line: • Pharmacists are drug experts • Responsibilities: • care for patients • dispensing medications • monitoring patient health and progress • educate consumers and patients on medications • advise physicians, nurses, and other health professionals on drug decisions. • provide expertise about the composition of drugs, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties and their manufacture and use • ensure drug purity and strength and make sure that drugs do not interact in a harmful way.

  15. 2+4 Year Program Freshman Year • Maintain a good GPA • Join many extracurricular activities/organizations that interest you • Make a resume with all your current skills and activities • Find work experience if your schedule permits • Volunteer/ Shadow • If you have work/study- choose to work with a science professor’s research • Go to professor office hours, make/maintain relationships with professors after the semester for recommendations

  17. 2+4 Year Program cont’d • Sophomore Year • Retake the PCAT in October if necessary • Submit PharmCAS and supplemental applications as soon as possible • Interviews occur in the spring • Maintain memberships in organizations that you joined • Keep maintaining a good GPA

  22. UMB Pharmacy School Pre-Requisite Courses *BSCI201 is ONLY offered in FALL and BSCI202 is ONLY offered in SPRING *65 credits minimum for pre-requisite courses

PharmCAS is a centralized application service provided by the American Association of College of Pharmacy (AACP) • www.pharmcas.org • Participating schools (~60) can be found:http://www.pharmcas.org/collegesschools/directoryalphastate.htm • Stats about the last entering class, application criteria, program pre-reqs, supplemental application info, deadlines, and other info can also be found on PharmCAS.

Letters of recommendation • Paper and electronic references accepted • Electronic (eLOR) is preferred • 3 recommendations per applicant • Check recommendations accepted • UMB does not accept recommendations from: TAs, friends, and family • Info for other pharmacy schools can be found on PharmCAS website: http://www.pharmcas.org/docs/ReqTypebySchool.pdf

Deadlines • All applications and documents must be received by PharmCAS by the deadline for the school • Cannot e-submit once deadline is reached • Early decision • Applicant can only apply to one ED school • Denied ED applicant may apply to more schools • Accepted ED applicant cannot apply to other PharmCAS schools
