  3. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Speed 1.5–9 Mbps Advantage Fast! Disadvantage Not always available in rural areas. Examples Verizon, SBC

  4. Cable Modem Speed 1.5–12 Mbps Advantage Fast! Disadvantage Not always available in rural areas. Examples Comcast, AT&T

  5. Leased Lines Speed 1.5–40,000 Mbps Advantage Extremely fast! Disadvantage Expensive. Examples T-1, T-2, DS-1, DS-3, OC-3, OC-48

  6. Broadband over Power Line (BPL) Speed 0.25–2 Mbps Advantage Available in rural areas! Disadvantage Susceptible to electrical interference. Unreliable. Examples IBEC (www.bpl.coop, www.bpldatabase.org)

  7. Satellite Speed 0.5–3 Mbps Advantage Available in rural areas! Disadvantage Daily/monthly download limits. Latency—real-time Internet games and Internet phone calls are not supported. Example HughesNet (www.hughesnet.com)

  8. 3G and 4G (Cell Phones) Speed 0.6–1.4 Mbps (3G) 3–10 Mbps (4G) Advantage Can be anywhere! Disadvantage Monthly download limits. 4G not available in rural areas. Examples Verizon, Sprint

  9. Fixed Wireless Speed 1–5 Mbps Advantage Can be anywhere! Disadvantage Not always available in rural areas. Examples Michiana Supernet (www.michianasupernet.com) Fourway (www.fourway.net)

  10. Wi-Fi Speed 2.5–11 Mbps Advantage Can be anywhere! Disadvantage Range is limited to feet, not miles. Example IU Secure (Configuration wizards can be downloaded from iuware.iu.edu)
