IUPAC RULES FOR NAMING ORGANIC COMPOUNDS I. 1. Find the longest continuous carbon chain and name it (i.e. methane, ethane, etc.). Put this root word at the end of the name.

1.Find the longest continuous carbon chain and name it (i.e. methane, ethane, etc.). Put this root word at the end of the name. 2.Number the carbons in the chain from the end that gives the lowest combination of numbers where the substituent groups are attached (i.e. left to right or right to left). This rule is for alkanes and selected other compounds when necessary.
3. Name the attached substituent groups by carbon number. Use prefixes if there is more than one of the same group attached to the continuous carbon chain. 4.When naming compounds with a functional group (ene, yne, alcohol, cyclos, etc.) number the carbons in the chain from the end closest to the functional group.
