Satire used in Huck Finn. SATIRE. Satire, or as I would say “the art of sarcasm” is one way of getting your point across. Twain uses satire a lot in Huck Finn, to poke fun at many different topics in society. He uses his characters show how he really felt on certain things in society.

  2. SATIRE Satire, or as I would say “the art of sarcasm” is one way of getting your point across. Twain uses satire a lot in Huck Finn, to poke fun at many different topics in society. He uses his characters show how he really felt on certain things in society.

  3. Mark Twain funny guy? Twain puts this in the first few pages of Huck Finn. “PERSONS attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.” This act of sarcasm just shows Mark Twains comedic humor.

  5. Huck Huckellberryis used to show Twain’s thoughts on Slavery a lot. In the beginning of the book, Huck thinks slavery is just a normal and everyday thing. Being that he was born and raised in he south, this is not uncommon. Throughoughtthe book though, Hucks idea of Slavery begins to change, and he starts making a change for the better.

  7. Huck going to Hell? • Hucks goes against natural life, and what he thinks it “right” by freeing Jim • Twain uses satire to show how backwards society is. Society has taught Huck that doing the wrong thing in this instance is the wrong thing. Huck tells himself, that doing the right thing will ultimately have him end up in hell.

  8. My favorite use of satire is on page 58. "When we was ready to shove off we was a quarter of a mile below the island, and it was pretty broad day; so I made Jim lay down in the canoe and cover up with a quilt, because if he set up people could tell he was a nigger a good ways off." – • Its obvious that from a far distance you cant tell someones color, Huck does this because he really thinks black and white people have a distinct difference

  10. Good Christian woman? Miss Watson is considered a good Christian woman in the story. Its ironic that even though she was considered one, she was still a slave holder. That is how all of society thought though. How can you consider yourself godly, but own another person?

  11. Widow douglass tries to “school” Huck on religion, but Huck dosent really get the big picture • When your 13 years old, the last thing you want to be learning is moses, and who did what thousands of years ago.

  13. Its okay to be in a murderous band of robbers, but to gather on a sunday,? No that’s forbidden, sundays are suppose to be sacred and holy. Its just like the idea of slavery. Its okay to treat other human beings like people, but its okay to still call yourself a christian? “Ben Rogers said he couldn't get out much, only Sundays, and so he wanted to begin next Sunday; but all the boys said it would be wicked to do it on Sunday, and that settled the thing.” (2.38)

Twain uses huck to say that religion should be based on day to day basis, not about old dead people who are irrelivant “After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take no stock in dead people.” (1.4)

  15. SATIRE AT ITS FINEST! • God is not a genie or Santa Clause. Twain pokes fun at people who think that god will answer to their EVERY need. • No his wish is not your command. “Miss Watson she took me in the closet and prayed, but nothing come of it. She told me to pray every day, and whatever I asked for I would get it. But it warn't so. I tried it. Once I got a fish-line, but no hooks. It warn't any good to me without hooks. I tried for the hooks three or four times, but somehow I couldn't make it work. By and by, one day, I asked Miss Watson to try for me, but she said I was a fool. She never told me why, and I couldn't make it out no way”. (3.1)

The preacher’s message is on brotherly love, and both families are sitting IN Church With guns in their laps!!!well at least they both enjoyed the sermon. • . “The men took their guns along, so did Buck, and kept them between their knees or stood them handy against the wall. The Shepherdsons done the same. It was pretty ornery preaching -- all about brotherly love, and such-like tiresomeness; but everybody said it was a good sermon, and they all talked it over going home, and had such a powerful lot to say about faith and good works and free grace and preforeordestination, and I don't know what all, that it did seem to me to be one of the roughest Sundays I had run across yet."

Society is funny huh? “Because Mary Jane 'll be in mourning from this out; and first you know the nigger that does up the rooms will get an order to box these duds up and put 'em away; and do you reckon a nigger can run across money and not borrow some of it?"
