This study aims to identify and quantify the causes of liver loss in abattoirs in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The findings will aid in improving animal health management techniques and implementing preventive strategies to minimize liver condemnation.

Introduction (FAO, 2012; Ogutta et al., 2014; Sans and Combris, 2015; Cawthorn.,2013)
Problem statement • Food security will require the production of more food, while minimizing waste • Meat safety should begin when the animal is conceived and continue to the point of delivery at the slaughterhouse (Edwards, Johnston, & Mead, 1997). • However, studies targeting food safety issues in different production systems in the Eastern cape (EC) is rarely available • Diseases are major obstacle to sustainable livestock production (Fitzpatrick, 2013). • Milk, meat, hide and skin, • Reproduction • Meat condemnation and mortality
Aim and Justification • To identify and quantify causes of liver loss at abattoirs • The study outcome will aid remedial action to boost animal health management techniques • Timely preventive strategies whichare rightful steps in avoiding disease burden can be taken • Effective prophylactic and chemotherapeutic regimen that will enhance animal health can initiated (Bernue´s et al., 2003)
Material and methods • Study Animals: • Study animals were those brought to abattoir for slaughter from different locations. They are male and female of various age, managed under different system. • Sample size:(Thrusfield, 2005) • Sampling technique: • Mix sampling methods will be employed in this study. • Convenient sampling • Purposeful sampling

Discussion and conclusion • This study found a significant percentage of food resource thrown away at the various abattoirs. • The major cause of liver rejection at abattoirs are parasitic zoonosis • Fasciolosis. • Cyst/Cysticercosis • Both diseases are major public health problems • The quantity of liver condemned in this study represents loss in monetary value for both the farmer, abattoirs owners and the South Africa's economy. • Such loss undermine effort to resolve food shortage (insecurity)
Recommendation • Improved animal husbandry • Improved extension and veterinary services • Regular training of slaughter personnel • Farmer education
