Active Learning Techniques • The “Minute Paper” • Students quickly write down their thoughts or questions on a topic. These can then be shared or collected at the end of class. • Think-Pair-Share • Pose a question to the class. Allow students to first think of an answer individually, then form pairs to create a common answer to share with the class. • Clarification Pauses • Just like is sounds – pause for a good 5 seconds after introducing a difficult topic to let it “sink in”.
Active Learning Techniques • Brainstorming • Have students jot down answers to a question, and then create a list of possible solutions based upon their collected answers. • Case Studies / Storytelling / News Flashes • Introduce “real-life” scenarios into lecture and try to incorporate (or maybe not) their content into lecture. • Cooperative Groups in Class • Like brainstorming, except have the students work in collaborative teams.
