INNOVATION NETWORKS Network structures link diverse knowledge producers, suppliers and users located in different organizations in order to facilitate rapid exchange and decision making. Networks, thus represent a mechanism for innovation diffusion through collaboration and the interactive relationship becomes not only a coordination device to create resources, but an essential enabling factor to technical progress. Network: A new form of organization within knowledge production
Innovation Network: Network of actors that cooperate to generate innovations, bringing a variety of sources of knowledge and skill often in new combinations in order to, • negotiate a potential innovation • shape the context for innovation • produce an innovation Innovation network, • is an important coordination device enabling and supporting inter-firm learning (diffusion of technology and know-how) • provide the environment for the exploitation of complementarities which is a crucial prerequisite to master “complex technologies” • constitute a setting for the exploration of synergies by the amalgamation of different technological competencies (feeding innovation process)
In an innovation network, participants must develop network competence. Network Orientation: the effective conduct of relationship and cross-relational tasks and the quality of technical and social capabilities, to most importantly create; • trust between partners • communication structures between partners • network wide coordination mechanisms
