  1. My hometown: love it or hate it!By Mascarello Luca 1 b led Hi everybody, my name is Luca and I live in Legnano. Legnano is located 22 km north of Milan with a total population ofnearly 57000 inhabitants. If you want to reach my hometown, just take the A8 toll road and exit directly at Legnano. Legnano has its own train station, too. The nearest international airport is Malpensa. To give an overview about the town historical profile, I can report that some historians believe that Legnano was the Liniciacum founded by the Romans. After the fall of Legnano in 1176, the brave Lombard League defeated the powerful Emperor Frederik I, called Redbeard. Connected with this historical event, every year on the last Sunday of May, in Legnano there’s the so called ”Palio of Legnano” where eight districts called “contrade”, compete for the Palio by an horse race. I belong to the Flora’s contrada. During this day the whole town is celebrating: over 1200 people dressed in medieval costumes take part into the great parade through the city streets to the football stadium where the horse race takes place. The winning contrada has the honour of keeping the Cross in its parish church for a whole year. But Legnano is not only the Palio: there are many cinemas, pubs, shops, stores and restaurants in town. There’s also a Castle which is still standing today from the Visconti period. It belonged to the archbishop of Milan in the twelfth century and was turned into a fortress by Ottone Visconti in 1282. Near the castle there’s the biggest and nicest park in Legnano, where it is possible to have summer barbecues, running or relaxing in the open air. Finally, the most important monument in Legnano is the Legnano battle monument well know from the local people as “ Alberto Da Giussano” statue, a local hero who is also one of the town’s symbols.
