  2. 早期療育是提供有發展遲緩問題的兒童及其家長的一種整合性服務，它的內容不同的細項，像是及早接受醫療、特殊教育、復健、及各項福利措施等等。

  3. 兒童從出生到六歲這個階段，在正常的情況下其腦細胞會快速的發展，這也是奠定其心理及生理發展的重要時刻。

  4. 然而，如果是有發展遲緩問題的兒童，由於其各方面的發展都還沒有定型，因此可塑性是非常高的，

  5. 如果這時候給予他們一些早期療育計畫，可以提升其發展的進度，對於發展遲緩的現象會有一定程度的幫助，也曾有案例因為早期療育計畫確實執行而讓發展遲緩現象消除。

  6. 在孩童身心發展的過程中，其實並沒有一定的發展速度和優先順序，因為這些會受到像是環境、遺傳及一些不明的因素影響。

  7. 根據統計，大概有約百分之六的兒童，因為這些因素的差異，其情緒、語言、認知、動作以及人際適應等等，會明顯的比不上同年齡的孩童，這些情況就被稱為發展遲緩。

  8. 發展遲緩最普遍的類型有認知發展、語言溝通、社會適應、情緒心理發展及動作等。

  9. 發展遲緩是兒童成長階段的一種現象，發展遲緩兒童如果能夠早期被發現，並給予適當的早期療育計畫，對於其將來的身心發展都是有助益的。
