  1. Strict Parents (Drill Sergeants) • Demands continuously • Punishes harshly • Values obedience • Discourages independence • Uses physical punishment over other alternatives and uses many harsh words • Resorts to yelling and threatening • Does not give reasonable choices

  2. Permissive Parents (Turtles) • Set no guidelines • Assert no authority • Remain distant • Remain uninvolved • Use excuses for not spending time with their child • Uses few words and fewer actions

  3. Overprotective (Helicopters) • Do not allow children to experience consequences and learn from mistakes • Provides no structure, but complains • Pleads and begs child to get things done • Uses many words and actions that indicate that the child is not capable of making decisions

  4. Moderate (Consultants) • Set reasonable standards (limits) • Have reasonable expectations • Encourage independence • Enforce rules fairly, firmly, and consistently • Allow children to make choices • Has a more democratic relationship • Recognizes the child’s individual needs and rights
