Utility End-users Storage systems Producers A Cloud Overlay for Smart Energy Applications Retailers IP Network
The future grid requires a secure distributed control anddata overlay network (on top of IP) Designed to support a whole spectrum of grid applications(unlike today’s silo’s): From off-line to time-critical data capturing with limited data exchange, using P2P communication, message broadcast/multicast/… Reaches into the core grid but can seamlessly be extendedto include residential end-points Design takes into account the stringent cyber-security requirementsthat are expected from the grid as a critical infrastructure Design takes into account scalability, self-healing and autonomous operation Allows multiple administrative domains to gain access to the gridfully respecting the business roles in the market A Holistic Approach to Energy Grids
…in combination with a pervasive, distributedmedium voltage synchrophasor sensing layer • Allow ‘MV’ operator to capture the real-time state of its network • This full medium voltage smart grid control enables: • Integration of high level renewables • Islanding, Microgrid • Advanced Fault Management C-DAX overlay + breakthrough PMU* technology provides the utility a complete view and control over its his network - anytime, anywhere * PMU = Phasor Measurement Unit

C-DAX: an Implementation Project • Capture Requirements for C-DAX derived from Smart Grid Application Use Cases • Medium voltage (MV) distributed energy resources (DER) and Microgrids • Market retail transactions • Low Voltage pervasive DER • Design (iteratively) and architect C-DAX based on requirements • Implement a prototype (& functional testing) • Validate prototype and assess performance (& simulations) • Lab experiment (realtime emulation lab - integrates field equipment) • Field trial in a life electricity network (Alliander MSLivelab)with selected applications
Dissemination Targeted conferences / events and publications(IEEE GreenCom, IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE PES-ISGT, etc.) Standardization Influence relevant standards (IEC 61850, IEEE C37.118, M490, IEC TC57, ETSI M2M, Cigre, IETF) Collaboration with other projects Dissemination on public Web site cdax.eu / cdax-project.eu (will be available by end December 2012) User Board Early dissemination of results to a select group of industry players Meetings organized at key project milestones C-DAX Communication
C-DAX Project Consortium • Duration: 36 months • Total budget: 4.315.303 Euro • EU-funding: 2.931.000 Euro • Started: October 1st, 2012 Key data
