  1. Introduction This initiative is predicated on the belief that children are better equipped to make progress if they can recall number facts very quickly. These facts are ‘just known’ by children. By improving skills of rapid recall, children can apply their knowledge and learning in a wider range of contexts… resulting in more rapid progress. Rapid Recall Number Facts

  2. Introduction In no way is this initiative intended to dominate the way we teach number facts at Beaver Road, but simply sit alongside the current effective teaching and provide a structure for checking progress. It has been designed to allow us to find a simple way towards a personalised approach to the setting of mathematics targetsfor our pupils It is strongly acknowledged that number facts are only of any use if they are: • revisited regularly; and • applied and used in many different contexts.

  3. 7 steps The Rapid Recall initiative establishes a hierarchy or order to ensure that children learn and practise their rapid recall in a progressive way. It outlines 7 steps. Each of these steps is broken into targets e.g. 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 etc. It is not essential for the targets to be tackled in the listed order. You will have been given by your child’s class teacher a current STEP which is their target. This is your record of their progress.

  4. Personalisation? Within a class at Beaver Road there will be children working across a range of different steps matched to their mathematical ability. Rapid Recall works by focussing on each child’s own individual targets.

  5. Format ? Each target is checked by children completing a timed quiz. There are two formats of quiz for each target (to take account of pupils with a good memory!). There will be timetabled opportunities forthe children to attempt the quizzes for their current target.

  6. Questions? Time? Almost all the quizzes have 24 questions; approximately 5 seconds per question during a 2 minute time limit. A countdown clock will be made available to the children during the quiz. Only teachers have access to the quiz questions

  7. Accuracy? The children will need to pass 2 different quizzes with 100% accuracy to complete the target. When this is the case it will be recorded by the teacher, and your child will inform you to keep your record at home up to date.

  8. Rewarding Success? Once all of the targets have been achieved in a ‘STEP’– the children will be rewarded for their success with a sticker/certificate and their photo will appear on our school’s Rapid Recall board outside the Key Stage 2 Hall.

  9. SEN and individual needs? Whilst these tests will work for the vast majority of pupils; there will be a minority for whom they are either unsuitable or will need amending. There cannot be any right or wrong approaches here. Class teachers will use their professional judgement to decide what is best for your child.

  10. How can I, as a parent, help? Please check and update your child’s current targets on their ‘STEP’. More detailed descriptions of each target can be found on www.beaverroad.org.uk - Parent Information – Rapid Recall We know at Beaver Road that parental support is vital to the successes of our pupils. Please endeavour to help your child achieve their current target through questioning. Revisit old targets too – committing this learning to Long Term memory
