Summarizing: You know what it means, but do you know how to do it? • When we summarize, we retell the most important ideas we came across in an informative text. • A good summary always includes the main idea of the work, and it briefly states the most important supporting details in a small amount of words. • When we summarize, we also paraphrase. That means that we take what the author says and put it into our own words. Not only does that help the reader understand and help us understand, it also lets us shorten the amount of words used and make things more brief.

The magician told the kid if he could do that, he'd give him $10,000. The kid did it and won the money. Quick notes (3 minutes): • When we summarize, we are going to imagine that our summaries are classified ads. • Each word we use will cost ten cents. • We will only be allowed to spend a certain amount on each ad.
