  3. Introduction • The Doha Development Round of World Trade Organization negotiations aims to lower trade barriers around the world, permitting free trade between countries. • The Doha round : Doha, Qatar in 2001, in Cancún, Mexico (2003), and Hong Kong, China (2005). • The EU is one of the key players in the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

  4. Market access for industrial goods • The EU wants to do away with high tariffs, tariff peaks and tariff escalation to increase trading opportunities, both for north-south as for south-south trade. • The EU is encouraging developed countries to provide to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) with: • ·Duty Free and Quota Free (DFQF) • ·‘Round for Free’ • the EU has proposed to apply a non-linear Swiss formula, achieving deeper cuts on higher tariffs

  5. Trade in Services: • Market access negotiations on services will benefit businesses as well as consumers world-wide. EU wants to encourage service trade • In its offers, the EU has put a strong focus on business services. • The EU pursues a gradual liberalization of the global trade in services both at multilateral level through the GATS negotiations in the WTO and at bilateral/regional level.

  6. Trade in agricultural goods • Europe is the biggest importer of agricultural goods worldwide, it imports from developing countries as much as the US, Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand taken together • The European Union is determined to reduce all forms of domestic support provided to farmers in developed countries, eliminate export subsidies by 2013 and lower tariff for agriculture products imports. • This should put an end to alleged unfair competition to developing countries' agriculture export.

  7. Trade and the Environment • Protecting the environment, social development, and consumer concerns are key elements of the Doha. • EU is working on: • ·Improving market access for environmental goods and services so that these would be more easily available and at lower prices; many such goods and services are central to the successful implementation of environmental policies, e.g. for energy efficiency and waste water treatment. • ·The EU wants the international community to make sure both trade and environmental laws work together to support sustainable development.
