  1. Welcome Parents!5th Grade Mrs. Hugo Mrs. Pawlowicz

  2. Classroom Schedule Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Monday schedules will look slightly different due to chorus and band time

  3. School Supplies List • Community Supplies: • Dry erase markers • Glue • Highlighers (boys) • Post-it notes (boys) • Tissues (girls) • Disinfecting wipes • Wide-Ruled notebook paper • Personal Supplies: • Sharpened pencils • Blue pens • 4 folders with prongs • (2) 3 subject notebooks with pockets • (2) 1 subject composition books • Hand sanitizer • Flat zipper pouch 

  4. Reading • We will use chapter books, Jr. Great Books,  Storyworks and Scope magazines, as well as Newsela and other online text. • We want students to demonstrate positive attitudes towards reading. • We will work on using reading strategies to comprehend text. • We will work on answering higher level thinking questions. • We will use multiple ways to explain our thinking, including short paragraphs and extended essays. • We will read for pleasure during SSR.

  5. WritingLucy Calkins • Narrative Writing • Research/Inforamtion Writing • Memoir Writing • Opinion Writing • More integration of writing within all subject areas. • There will be writing homework.

  6. Mathematics – Grade 5 • enVision Math 2.0  A blended approach to  teaching mathematics. • Instructional strategies • Individual exploration • Whole group instruction • Small group instruction for enrichment or re-teaching • Bounce Pages APP – Homework help

  7. Math • It is IMPERATIVE that students bring their math books to and from school EVERYDAY! • ALL tests and quizzes need to be signed and returned, so please be on the look out for those papers in the Thursday Folder. • Math homework should take NO more that 20-30 minutes each night. If it does, sign the page and have your child come see me in HOMEROOM. • We encourage everyone to take some time to explore online resources at home!  • Tests will be announced one week in advance. Quizzes will be announced no less than 3 days in advance. 

  8. Science • NGSS Life Science(interactive notebook) • Astronomy and Weather (science booklet) • NGSS Physical Science (interactive notebook) • Interactive Notebooks – students will be working on neatness, organization, and recording accurate information • Students should review science material throughout the week, not just the night before a test.  • **Study guides will be sent home before all tests.  • **All tests and quizzes need to be signed. They will go home in the Thursday folder. 

  9. Social Studies • Geography • Native Americans • Early Settlements • Revolutionary War • Students will have a folder for social studies. They will keep their materials in there throughout a unit. Once a unit has been tested, the materials can be cleaned out.  • Tests will have study guides and should be signed and returned. They will go home in Thursday folders. 

  10. Responsibility • Copy homework accurately and neatly. • Homework: Spelling, Reading, Writing, and Math every night except weekends.  Science & Social Studies as assigned.   • Reading at home each night is an expectation. More details to come. • Homework will be graded this year, mostly for completion and effort.  • Reminder - Thursday Folders. Every Thursday your child will bring home the folder with important information from school and graded assignments from all classes. Please sign and return designated papers.   • As always, feel free to write a note in a homework pad, send an email, or give us a call if you have any questions or concerns.  • Internet access at home

  11. School-wide Behavior Management Keep and redeem for possible prizes Place in ClubHOUSE bucket for house points Targets distributed for various positive behaviors and collected in “ClubHOUSE” bucket Students earn ClubHOUSE points for targets

  12. School-wide Behavior Management Students will have numbered clips. They will move them up or down on the chart based on the choices they make each day. If a child ends up on red at any point during the day, they will have to complete a “think sheet” that will be sent home for a parent signature to keep communication open about student behaviors.

  13. Edline • You should already have your activation code for your Edline account. Please see the office if you do not have an Edline account.  •  Grades will be posted to Edline 3 times each quarter, except for the first quarter.  • Please avoid waiting until the last day of the quarter to check Edline grades. 

  14. Parent Volunteers • Both teachers  have a basket placed by the back door in her classrooms. IF you are ever in the building and are able to help with copies, etc., just check the bin!  WE would really appreciate it!  

  15. Dates to Remember • Harford Glen Trip: • November 27th-29th.   • Harford Glen will be an overnight adventure.  • Please try to attend one of their Open Houses to get more information.  • We will also be sending home a parent handbook with detailed information about packing, expectations, etc. Look for this at the end of September.  • 5th Grade Field Trip:       The Franklin in Philadelphia    June 5, 2017 • Patriot Field Trip to Historic Philadelphia– May 30th early in the morning. 

  16. Photo Release Forms • If you could fill out the bubble sheet forms on your child's desk BEFORE you leave tonight, that would be greatly appreciated.  (pencil only) • You can hand the completed form to your child's homeroom teacher or put it face down on my desk. • It is IMPORTANT for you to bubble in YES for question number one if you would like your child's picture to appear in our school yearbook!

  17. Conclusion • Please complete the pink sheet on your child’s desk. • You can take the paper home and send it in with your child on Tuesday! • This presentation will be uploaded to our Edline pages. Please refer to it as necessary throughout the year. • You will also need to take the brown packet and complete the papers from the inside. Please return them to school as soon as possible! • Thank you for coming!
