I started the day by setting the materials at the front of my room and letting the students come up and choose the materials that they wanted to mix together to make heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. This was a bit chaotic and very messy. I also saw that my materials were going to be depleted very quickly, so I altered my method for the remaining classes.
After 1st block, I set out about 4-6 different materials and let the students create their mixtures from the materials AT THEIR DESKS! This made things a lot less messy and chaotic!
Students still had choice among the materials I put on their desk. When they were done, I walked both mixtures around the room for the other groups to “judge”. Groups were rewarded if they were able to develop both heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures.
